21. Naval Architecture, Early 19th Century East Indiaman schematic Engraving
Publisher: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orne and Brown Patternoster Row (London) 1826
Engraving dated 1826, a schematic illustrating the construction of an East Indiaman sailing vessel. In four panes (folded, from book) 10.5 x 8 inches folded, about 10.5 x 31 inches extended. All very good except that the adhesive along one fold that set out the engraving in the book has created some acid burn and points of separation along that fold - needs archival restoration at that fold. Otherwise very good. Nautical

Click for larger image 25. Deed to One-half Interest in Pioneer Steam Sawmill and Properties, Placer County California 1860
Publisher: Placer County California 1860
Light blue paper, 17 x 14 inches, folded in offical manner to 8.5 x 3.5 inches. An indenture specifying the sale of one-half interest in the Pioneer Steam Sawmill, located on owl creek about two miles from Yankee Jim's [sic] and including about three hundred acres of land togeher with houses, stables, lumber, machinery. Dated July 13, 1860 and recorded in Placer County California. Party of the first part was H.C. Hollinshead, party of the second part was Samuel Todd, who purchased this one-half interest for the sum of $2420. This area was in Gold Rush country, one wonders what became of it. A Samuel Todd was elected Sheriff of Placer County in 1854, perhaps the same individual. The deed is in good condition with a small oily stain about 2 inches long along the left (folded) edge, and some charming ink marks on the back where the recorder apparently wiped or tested his pen point (they are clearly the imprint of a dip pen nib). Publisher: Hood River Orgon 1928
Mount Hood Railroad Company: July 1928. Issued at Baker, Oregon by J.W. Pentney, auditor, in the amount of $11.20 to F.M. Shurtliff (Hood River, Oregon) and endorsed by hand by F.M. Shurtliff. Punched cancellation, not affecting signatures. Crisp, clean condition. The Mount Hood Railway Company was established in 1906 to transport men and materials to the logging camps and mills of the Upper Hood River Valley (Oregon) and to transport lumber back down. Eventually area fruit growers also came to depend on the line, and it was a popular means of transportation for locals and tourists. Because three miles of the route is on steep a steep grade the locomotive had to push the train in reverse to negotiate the incline, giving rise to the nickname "The Backwards Railroad." The train, the line, and the 1911 depot have been restored and rides are once again a tourist attraction. EPHEM 2456 Very Good Condition. Ephemera
