Native American Indian Hoof Rattle Belt with Fetish and Book
This red flannel band of deer hoof rattles is sewn over stiff dried hide with either sinew or a very stiff plant fiber. The beads are natural seeds or pods drilled and strung on leather thongs. There is a stone fetish with a turquoise-colored bead inserted, plus a pale horn bead and one that appears to be carved stone. The entire string is about 64 inches long, sewn into a hoop. There are a few repairs to the seams using ordinary thread. I have no provenance on this item. It resembles those used in the Deer Dance by tribes of Northern California. Hoof rattles were also used by other tribes, more commonly as ankle bands or on gourds or other shaker type rattles. In addition to the belt, this offer includes the following book: HOOF RATTLES AND GIRLS' PUBERTY RITES IN NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA (by Driver and Riesenberg); NEGATIVE PAINTED POTTERY OF ANGEL MOUNDS SITE AND IT DISTRIBUTION IN THE NEW WORLD (by Curry). Paper wraps, Qto, 90 pp., illustrated with maps and photos. Supplement to International Journal of American Linguistics, Vol 16, No. 4: Indiana University Publications in Anthropology and Linguistics, Memoir 4 and 5. October 1950. Cover wear along upper edge, some bent corners of bottom pages, a little age darkening around extremities of cover. A few light pencil marks against text. A scholarly look at two interesting subjects. Good condition. TFAC 1006 FREE SHIPPING IN USA: At cost elsewhere (to be arranged)

Author: Ansel Adams
Typed Letter, Signed, on Ansel Adams Stationery

Publisher: Carmel California 1964.
Ansel Adams, typed letter signed on Ansel Adams stationery (Carmel California). Dated May 6, 1964. This letter is addressed "Dear Dr. Davenport, " and continues to explain that he has just returned from a trip, hence "tardiness in replying to your letter of the 27th and commenting upon the prints." After other comments on the presentation, he offers critiques on 13 individually numbered images from a 2-Volume portfolio of images submitted by Davenport. Also present with the letter is a portion of one volume of the portfolio, with 5 images remaining in it. Cursory examination suggests that this is Vol 1 of the two. The letter signs off, "Keep it up - send more stuff whenever you can! all best" (signed in pen) Ansel Adams. All in very good conditoin. This letter has remarkable content and illustrates Adams's "teaching" mode. Charles K. Davenport was a medical doctor in California, working his way through medical school by selling his photos. He was a student of Ansel Adams and they subsequently became close friends. County. During his school years, Davenport sold photographs at banks, business offices, and other venues to help support his studies. He was a student of Ansel Adams in the 1960s, and they remained lifetime friends. Davenport's landscapes and still lifes were exhibited in the former medical society in Colton, and in San Bernardino County Museum, UC Riverside, and many other venues in California and later, in Oregon. His images appeared on magazine covers, calendars, and in books and an encyclopedia. Davenport passed away in Springfield, Oregon in 2007.
